Golf Exercises to Increase the Power, Speed, and Distance of Your Tee Shots

Sean Cochran asked:

Golf exercises used correctly can increase the power, speed, and distance of your tee shots. Through the utilization of what I call golf power exercises the reality of increased distance of your tee shots can occur. I have discussed power relative to developing club head speed in previous articles. If you recall clubhead speed is contingent upon power development in your body, and golf fitness exercises can increase club head speed through increasing the power outputs of your body.

An additional component exists relative to your body, power development, and clubhead speed. The additional component we are talking about is speed. Yes, speed is a critical component of increasing power in your golf swing, and directly related to all of your golf fitness power exercises. Remember, power is the ability of the body to create the greatest amount of force in the shortest amount of time possible. (Vladimir Zatsiorsky, Professor, Department of Exercise and Sport Science, Penn State Univeristy)

If we take this piece of information, the additional information we know about golf fitness training, and incorporate them into our exercises. The exercises within the power development section of our program must be executed at a high rate of speed.

This accomplishes over time the ability of our bodies to generate more force in the shortest amount of time possible. This allows our body to generate more power within the mechanics of the golf swing. The end result is increased cluhead speed, and when the clubhead is traveling at a faster rate at impact with the golf ball. The golf ball has the potential to travel a longer distance (remember swing mechanics also play a part.)

A simple concept once broken down step-by-step but let’s make sure we all understand how to implement speed into our golf fitness exercises. Take the example of the Medicine Ball Side-to-Side Exercise. Speed of movement is a very important component of this exercise.

The Side-to-Side Medicine Ball Rotation requires you to rotate back and forth maintaining the “athletic position” of the exercise. In order to induce a power developing effect the exercise should be executed as fast as possible. This elicits the development of power in the muscles of the core. If-and-only if the form of the exercise is maintained. If you find yourself loosing your technique as you increase the speed of the exercise. Slow it down a little and increase the speed as your body becomes stronger.

Remember, golf exercises in the the specific form of golf power exercises can improve your golf swing, and distance of tee shots. It is through these types of golf fitness exercises within a comprehensive golf training program increased power and speed can occur. Power outputs from the body have a direct effect on clubhead speed. Increase the power outputs of your body and you can drive the golf ball farther. And remember speed is a component of power and must be a principle involved in your golf fitness power exercises.

Golf Performance Enhancement: Improve Golf Flexibility And Your Golf Score

Friday, December 25th, 2009

Joey Atlas asked:

tching and flexibility exercises will enhance your game, the power & precision of your swing and will help prevent common golf injuries. Regularly sticking to a golf stretching program can improve your range of motion and prevent stiffness, as well as injuries - both chronic and acute. But, these golf stretches should be done on a regular basis in order for you to experience maximum, long lasting benefits and game improvements. You will surely hear arguments suggesting that this negatively affects your shot distance and the mechanics of your swing. But I can tell you from first-hand and hands-on experience that proper stretching, on a daily basis, no matter what your golf schedule is, will help you and your game in ways you can’t even imagine. Simple, yet dynamic, full-body exercises can be used for warming up, because they do not overstress the body. Warming up may include walking briskly for three to five minutes (although its not mandatory), followed by core looseners, slow arm swings, hip rotations and torso twists. These types of general fitness exercises do not increase your golf specific flexibility; they simply warm up your muscles, making a muscle strain less likely. You may be surprised to learn how many choices you have for a golf stretching program. Yoga type moves and elastic band training are two of the popular choices. Full-body range of motion exercises increase flexibility in all areas of the body, relatively quickly. Static stretch positions are also a good way to speed recovery after a round on the course. Elastic band training serves as a good golf stretching program and has other benefits, including increased strength in the shoulders, hips and core. Sports training and rehabilitation pros in many settings are including rubber band conditioning in their golf training programs because the bands provide dynamic resistance that regular weight lifting and traditional machines do not provide. For example, routines can be designed that simulate the golf-swing, with smooth resistance, that doesn’t rely on gravity, throughout the movement. Videos or DVDs are advisable for any golf flexibility routine. You need to “see” how the movement should be performed. Otherwise, you might hurt yourself doing an exercise that was actually intended to prevent injuries. For some, it’s also a good idea to stretch in front of a full length mirror. That way, you can watch your form and be sure that you are doing the move as the instructors in the DVD or on the video are describing. If you exercise regularly, your golf stretching program can be incorporated into your regular workout. Choose one that you enjoy, something that feels good to you. Everyone is slightly different. Your current level of fitness and physical ablity is an important consideration, as well. Don’t overdo it - and don’t simply guess at what you should be doing or try to copy what you see other people doing.. Remember to stay well-hydrated when you are on the course to get the most out of your golf flexibility program. Drinking some water or mid electrolyte beverage will help prevent muscle cramping, and ensure that you are fully energized to realize the benefits of your golf stretching program. And don’t forget about…

You’ll Never Develop Your Best Golf Swing Without Golf Fitness Training

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Harry Monell asked:

When it comes to your best golf swing, consistency should be the most important goal, since it will ultimately be the key to your level of participation, personal satisfaction and overall enjoyment of the game of golf. But, all too often, as golfers, we tend to overlook or at the very least, procrastinate on a crucial part of our golf training and development. Among the most important of golf tips is that physical fitness is essential, not only for golf and other sports activities, but is fundamental to just about everything else we do in life.

Activities such as walking, running or simply mowing the lawn require at least an average degree of fitness. However, when we participate in any sport, each particular sport will demand its own unique set of skills, which in turn, require the development or conditioning of very specific sets of muscles, tendons and ligaments. Failure to address such a critical area of our game can not only compromise our overall enjoyment of the sport, it can often result in any number of avoidable and inconvenient injuries, to the back, shoulder, wrist, knee, etc.

The most obvious benefit of proper fitness is that we generally feel better. We’ll have more energy and greater stamina, which will minimize fatigue during the final holes of each round of golf. After all, the typical golf beginner often starts out by utilizing golf as an activity that will help to get into shape and stay somewhat fit. Understandably, it’s also a genuine opportunity to get out of the enclosed space of our house or office and into the great outdoors, soaking up the fresh air and rejuvenating warmth of a sun filled afternoon. You don’t need a golf book or golf lesson to convince yourself that there’s truly no better way to enjoy any day of the week. Nor is there a better way to mitigate the abundance of built-up emotional stress.

Additionally, if we utilize a few golf exercises, we’re going to stay more physically fit, and will generally be more alert and better able to focus on the ever-changing variables that challenge our game. And, since golf can be such a mental game, proper fitness can only help in that regard. Golf fitness training can also reduce the incidence of physical stress and injury, allowing you to concentrate on the enjoyable aspects of your golf game, rather than unnecessary pain and suffering.

Mastering the consistency and execution of your best golf swing and strongest golf grip will require some measure of power, strength, flexibility and endurance. This can usually be accomplished with light workouts, using hand weights, exercise tubing and a variety of stretching exercises, requiring little or no investment, outside of a few golf lessons.

Whether your golf game is competitive or simply relaxing, golf fitness training will add energy, precision and consistency to your golf instruction, as well as, your game. And, at the same time reduce the likelihood of any significant muscle soreness or injury.

Find the Right Golf Fitness Book For You

Friday, December 4th, 2009
golf training
Maxx Johnson asked:

Do you want to transform your body? Do you want to transform your golf game? How do you go about finding the right golf fitness book or golf training book for yourself? Golf fitness books are written to give you ready-made golf fitness programs, exercises, step-by-step instructions and illustrations can quickly transform your body and your golf game. So then the questions become: what are the components of a complete golf fitness book? and what areas should a golf fitness book should cover?

Basically, golf fitness books should cover the following four topics:

1. Golf strength specific exercises

2. Golf flexibility

3. Aerobic conditioning or endurance training for golf

4. Golf nutrition

Keep in mind that all four of these topics should be specifically designed for a golfer and not for a person looking to just improve their physical fitness. The book you choose to improve your golf and fitness should offer multiple plans for different physical levels. In addition, the book should have a golf fitness evaluation in the book to determine your current golf fitness level and ultimately decide on the starting point for your program. Using this type of book, you are sure that the program or exercises you are using are right for you and the program will help your game not hurt it.

The main reason I hear from my students on why they put off beginning a golf training program is that they are not sure where to start and knowing they are in the right golf fitness program for them.

In addition, the golf fitness book should discuss the direct benefits of any exercise to a golf swing. Many people are motivated to use a golf exercise or a golf exercise program once they read and understand how it will benefit their game.

Finally, a golf fitness book should have progressive golf fitness exercises and complete golf fitness programs. You should be able to logically see how these fitness exercises and golf programs to take you to your next level. Many books offer general exercises that are not golf-specific and in turn, have no logical sense of format or progression. This will only leave you frustrated and not knowing where to start and if you do start a program unable to chart any progress.

Of course before beginning any fitness program, it is wise to check with your doctor or physician before you begin. Do not let this discourage you if you are out of shape. This visit would just be to determine a safe starting point for you. Although the starting point could be more remedial than you thought, it will just give you an even greater sense of pride once you accomplish you goals. Where you begin is not good or bad it is what one of my friends says all the time “It is what it is.”

To find a golf fitness book that works for you, the next time you go to a bookstore or get online and do a search for golf fitness books, make sure you thoroughly evaluate the explanation and chapters to reassure you are doing the right thing.
